A sense of normality?

Well conditions on the night of 27th June were pretty much perfect for mothing and the trapping results did not disappoint and were actually up where they would normally be at this time of year given such optimal conditions.

A few images below.

Of moths and bier...

Both macros and micros turning up at the trap in much greater variety of late, with the night of 25th June very productive (in common with many others I see from various blogs).

Many more new for years added over recent days although I did not trap over the Moth Night weekend due to a very long weekend in Munich:

Catching up

Things been going along a little better to the garden trap over recent days, a few more new for years as the garden year total creeps towards 150.  Still much better results on daytime and dusking searches, particularly with micros, with regular updates on the sister blog: http://kentmicromoths.blogspot.co.uk/

Pink elephant on parade

The highlight from last nights trapping - Small Elephant Hawk-moth - always a treat and much beloved by my daughters.

Small Elephant Hawk-moth (Deilephila porcellus)

Small Elephant Hawk-moth (Deilephila porcellus) (3)

As far as the full catch goes, well for this year it was a good one as I managed to find an even more sheltered spot to keep the trap running through the deluge that came early in the night.

Mixed bag and rearing success

Just to get things up to date, here are a few from recent days that are new for the year.

Trapping conditions remain generally dire with early stage records, and in particular Coleophora cases, keeping the home fires burning, more of which over at: http://kentmicromoths.blogspot.co.uk/

The first three were from a trip to Gloucestershire last week.

Early stages: Celypha woodiana

Definitely one from further afield - mines of Celypha woodiana on Mistletoe, found this week in an old orchard in Grafton, VC33, East Gloucestershire.  This rare micro moth has a very restricted distribution, limited to the areas where the host plant can still be found in relative abundance.

Of Flames, Foxgloves and other early summer usual suspects

Well, the calendar says it's summer, shame about the weather again now though.

Nothing spectacular on the macros front of late just a few usual suspects added to the year list.  Micros still better with the net than to the trap: http://kentmicromoths.blogspot.co.uk/2012/06/more-net-gains.html
