<br />
The majority of the list is of course made up of early stage micros and miners plus the customary January 1st tick of Raspberry Clearwing galls and larvae.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mrshentz/6486201921" title="Raspberry Clearwing (Pennisetia hylaeiformis) larval gall by MrShentz, on Flickr"><img alt="Raspberry Clearwing (Pennisetia hylaeiformis) larval gall" height="334" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7022/6486201921_1b765a4d90.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
The usual suspects are also putting in an appearance at the garden trap, with numbers rising steadily over recent days, including Grey Shoulder-knot, Dotted Border, Oak Beauty and Clouded Drab<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mrshentz/10747353825" title="Grey Shoulder-knot (Lithophane ornitopus) by MrShentz, on Flickr"><img alt="Grey Shoulder-knot (Lithophane ornitopus)" height="333" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3771/10747353825_0ee8fda93b.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />

<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mrshentz/7003058929" title="Oak Beauty (Biston strataria) and 2 Clouded Drab (Orthosia incerta) by MrShentz, on Flickr"><img alt="Oak Beauty (Biston strataria) and 2 Clouded Drab (Orthosia incerta)" height="333" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7224/7003058929_f38c51820c.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
...and apologies for the dodgy reference to a Scooby Doo villain, couldn't resist given that it's leaf miners that have contributed most significantly to the year total to date...<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mrshentz/11463086396" title="Ectoedemia heringella mines on Quercus ilex by MrShentz, on Flickr"><img alt="Ectoedemia heringella mines on Quercus ilex" height="333" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7412/11463086396_086465b38b.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />

<br />
If you've still got Oak, Sallow or a range of other deciduous leaves on the trees near you, you could still find the larval feeding signs of this species.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01104214338984557901noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8856366335235731177.post-55481484835645849332014-11-30T00:30:00.001-08:002014-11-30T00:30:28.861-08:00Moth montage #1: Acleris rhombanaTo while away the winter and stave off moth withdrawal symptoms I am messing around with my moth images to produce a series of montages: first up is Acleris rhombana.<br />

Very different to what most people think of in relation to Welsh miners:<br />

The moth trap came along and plenty of miner searches were conducted too (more on which in <a href="http://eastkentgardenmoths.blogspot.co.uk/2014/11/a-different-sort-of-welsh-miner-wales.html" target="_blank">Part II: Welsh miners</a>).<br />

<br />
To start the catching up, a few images from the thriving Raspberry Clearwing colony that is just yards from my garden. This female was successfully reared from a larva plus also managed to assemble a male to her later on.<br />

It took until 25th March to get there last year.<br />
<br />
The success, like last year, is simply down to extensive daytime searching for early stages, predominantly of micros.<br />
<br />
The species to push the list to 50 this year was the not-so-spectacular mine of Bucculatrix nigricomella in my front garden.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/mrshentz/12724210093/" title="Bucculatrix nigricomella by MrShentz, on Flickr"><img src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/4/3771/12724210093_69de9dff3b.jpg" width="500" height="334" alt="Bucculatrix nigricomella"></a><br />

<br />
The new for garden Red Chestnut from my most recent post, was species #51 for 2014, so hopefully onwards and upwards.<br />

<br />
Was very pleased to find her scuttling down an Ash tree trunk; there were males on nearby bushes too.<br />

<br />
The highlight by a country mile being the Yarrow-feeding larvae of <i>Aethes margaritana;</i> not much to look at now but the adult completes a real ugly duckling story.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/mrshentz/12117695055/" title="Aethes margaritana larva by MrShentz, on Flickr"><img alt="Aethes margaritana larva" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2891/12117695055_808dbaef0c.jpg" height="334" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />

<br />
Some of the rest include:<br />
<br />
Raspberry Clearwing larvae - good to see the local colony thriving, although under the threat of development!<br />
Pammene regiana - cocoons under Sycamore bark<br />
Limnaecia phragmitella in Typha seed heads<br />
Metzneria metzneriella larvae in Knapweed seed heads<br />
M. lappella larvae in burdock seed heads<br />
Angle Shades and Brimstone Moth larvae<br />
Female Early Moth<br />
Luffia ferchaultella cases in several locations<br />
Cases of Coleophora gryphipennella masquerading as thorns on Dog Rose <br />
<br />
The only other adult moths have been Ypsolopha mucronella, Agonopterix heracliana, Dark Chestnut, Mottled Umber and Emmelina monodactyla.<br />

Some of the species that pushed it beyond 700 are illustrated below...<br />
<br />
Scallop Shell (Rheumaptera undulata)<br />
